Meerkat Mischief: The Burrow Builders

Our meerkat colony is known for its energy, teamwork, and endless curiosity. These tiny creatures are always on the move, digging intricate tunnels or standing sentinel on their hind legs to watch for danger. One memorable event occurred when the meerkats extended their tunnel system into the neighboring enclosure, which housed a giant tortoise named Sheldon.

While Sheldon was unbothered by his new “neighbors,” the zookeepers were both amused and concerned about the meerkats’ ingenuity. It took them hours to carefully redirect the mischievous diggers back to their area without disturbing the tortoise. Now, the enclosure is reinforced to prevent further escapades, but the meerkats continue to entertain themselves by creating elaborate sand structures and playing with enrichment toys provided by their keepers.

Each meerkat has its own unique personality. The alpha male, named Zippy, is known for his assertiveness, while his sister, Dottie, has a softer demeanor and loves to interact with the zookeepers during feeding time. Their playful nature makes them a favorite attraction, especially for children.
