The Silver Gull: A Clever Opportunist

Silver gulls are natural scavengers and brilliant problem-solvers, and our resident gull, Charlie, has taken these traits to a whole new level. Charlie arrived at the zoo as a rescued bird with a wing injury and quickly adapted to his new environment. He has become famous for his clever antics and ability to "train" visitors.

One of Charlie’s signature moves is balancing on one leg while squawking rhythmically to draw attention. Visitors often laugh at his act and reward him with snacks. Charlie has even figured out the timing of daily feeding sessions for other animals, strategically positioning himself to catch any leftover food.

Despite his mischievous tendencies, Charlie has a gentle side. He often approaches his favorite zookeeper, Emma, and “asks” for a scratch by gently nudging her hand with his beak. His story highlights the intelligence and adaptability of gulls, making him a beloved member of the zoo’s aviary.
