Highland Cattle: A Gentle Giant with a Big Personality

Highland cattle are iconic for their long, shaggy coats and impressive horns, and our bull, Angus, is no exception. Despite his imposing appearance, Angus is one of the gentlest animals in the zoo. Every morning, Angus waits patiently near the gate for his keeper, who always greets him with a few apple slices—his favorite treat.

What makes Angus truly special is his eagerness to “help” with tasks. Whenever his keeper works in the enclosure, Angus follows closely, sometimes nudging the wheelbarrow with his horns or attempting to carry tools in his mouth. His playful behavior has endeared him to the staff, who often describe him as a “giant puppy.”

Angus also enjoys mud baths, especially during hot summer days. Visitors love watching him roll around in the mud, which serves as a natural sunscreen and insect repellent. His calm and friendly demeanor makes him a favorite among children, who are often amazed by his sheer size and gentle nature.
