African Penguin: A Coastal Charmer

Our African penguin colony is always bustling with activity, and the star of the group is Pebble, a curious and bold penguin who loves interacting with visitors during feeding shows. Pebble has a unique way of “greeting” visitors—he waddles up to the glass and taps it with his beak, much to the delight of onlookers.

African penguins are known for their distinctive braying calls, which sound like a donkey’s hee-haw. Pebble’s call is particularly loud, earning him the nickname “Little Vocalist” among the staff. Despite his playful nature, Pebble takes his parenting duties seriously. Last year, he successfully raised two chicks with his mate, Pebbles.

The zoo’s penguin enclosure mimics their natural rocky coastal habitat, complete with a saltwater pool where the penguins love to dive and play. The staff also works closely with conservation programs to protect these endangered birds in the wild.
