Japanese Deer: Guardians of Tradition

The Japanese deer, also known as sika deer, are graceful creatures revered in their native land. At our zoo, they thrive in a tranquil forested enclosure designed to reflect their natural habitat.

Our lead stag, Hiro, is a majestic presence with his beautifully branching antlers. During the autumn rutting season, Hiro becomes especially vocal, emitting deep bellows to assert his dominance. Visitors are often captivated by his displays, which include powerful antler clashes with younger males.

Outside the breeding season, Hiro is remarkably gentle. He is known for his curious nature, often approaching keepers during feeding time. The younger deer in the herd frequently mimic his behavior, creating touching moments that highlight the social dynamics of these animals. Their connection to Japanese culture, where they are considered sacred messengers of the gods, adds an extra layer of fascination for visitors.
